Here at Sunset Mountain we don’t have any grandchildren of
our own -- yet :) So we steal them from other people! We have
been truly blessed by God. Since we started showing in 2003
there have been 14 children who have shown our horses. We
feel like many of these are now members of our family. And it
has been an honor and a privilege to watch these young people
increase in self confidence and discipline as they work with our
horses. We currently have five young people working with and
showing our horses.
Will Beaty started showing horses with us back in 2009. That
would be back when he was age 10. Since then he has shown
several of our horses and has won a World Championship with
Larry and a Reserve National Championship with Libby.
In 2017 Will is 18, a senior at Stephenville High. And he is one of
the most outstanding and hard working young men that I know.
Will’s last year of eligibility in showing as a youth in AMHA is
2017.
Will has also frequently helped us at parades and public events
like the Benbrook Heritage Festival.
Will is planning to go into business. And to one day have a ranch
of his own (he already has a truck :) ). And one day I bet there
will be at least a few miniature horses on that ranch.
Faith started showing with us when she was age 4. This picture is of
her with Lady and Sunshine. Her favorite horse is Lady, but she also
shows Glory, Sunshine, and MoonDust. And any horse in reach is
likely to be hugged or kissed. She plans to keep showing for another
90 or 100 years. Yeah, she is hooked!
Gracie McBride started showing with us in 2016. She shows Glory
(shown above), Libby, and Sunshine. Gracie earned two All Star
awards in 2016 with Glory and Libby in Jumper. Glory’s award was
Reserve Champion All Star, #2 in the National rankings for 2016.
Matt and Brad Beaty are Will Beaty’s younger brothers. They
showed with us for many years. Matt showed Glory and Brad
showed Sunshine. Both boys worked very hard and did well.
Brad (on the left) and Matt (on the right) are shown here ready
to compete at a Regional AMHA Championship. Good looking
boys!
Matt’s story is amazing. Matt had open heart surgery for
congenital heart disease in 2004 as a 9-day old baby. It never
seemed to slow him down out here!
Here is Brad with Sunshine. Brad scored a 5th place ribbon in a
class of over 25 horses at an AMHA World Championship in
Halter Obstacle in 2015.
The entire Beaty family has high character and honors God in
all they do. It has been an honor to work with all of them.
Lauren Beaty only showed with us for a year. Will, Matt, and
Brad are her brothers. Lauren worked very hard. She showed a
black and white filly named Hershey Kiss in Halter competition.
Here she is at an AMHA World Champioinship show in Fort
Worth.
“Kissy” now “works” at a horse training facility in Mississippi
keeping “big” horses in line. (I’ve heard there is a shortage of
horse treats in Mississippi -- I’m sure Kissy has nothing to do
with that. )
Meet Sarah Addison and her friend Glory. Sarah is 6 years old
and has just started showing with us in 2017. She is competing
in Halter Obstacle, Costume, and will start Hunter soon. Look at
that cool costume with her as Beauty and Glory as The Beast.
More pictures later.
Brooke Glosser started showing our horses in 2010. She has won
championships with both Larry and MoonDust.
And here is a picture I am particularly fond of. Brooke gave me
some excellent advice in 2016 on Halter Obstacle. It was not
quite good enough for me to win the championship. But I
suppose the Reserve Championship is good enough --- when the
one that beat you is your future trainer :). This was a class of 54
horses in Halter Obstacle at the 2016 AMHR National
Championship.
For more information on using Brooke to train your horses,
We have had two young ladies show our horses that were named
“Brooke”. This is Brooke Woods. Brooke has also won a
championship with Larry. She is shown above with a Reserve
World Championship she won with Larry in 2016. She has also
shown Libby and scored in the top 10 at the AMHR National
Championship. On several occasions she has clipped our horses
for us.
Brooke has leased one of our mares for AOTE training. That is
“Amateur Only Trained and Exhibited”. In other words no
professional assistance is allowed. We are looking forward to
seeing Brooke in the show ring with “Eye Candy” later in 2017.
Two other pictures of Brooke -- although these are not our
horses:
Haley Carsten is an amazing young lady who comes from an
amazing family. She took a pasture horse that we were not using
and turned it into a champion multiple times over. ERL So Be It
(“Sobe”) was a horse that we owned. Sobe was trained as a
Classic / Western Driving horse and in Hunter jumping. Haley
and her mom, Theresa, spent hours working with Sobe. And
when they finished they had a horse that was competing and
winning ribbons and then championships in driving, Driving
Obstacle, Halter Obstacle, Hunter, Jumper, Showmanship, and
Roadster. And Sobe now belongs to the Carstens.
It would be nice to be able to take some of the credit in helping
to train Haley. But really all we did was provide the horse and
the opportunity and point her to a professional trainer (Lisa
Barnes). Haley, Theresa, and Sobe did all the rest.
It was a joy though to watch her blossom in confidence and
ability. Haley has more horses now. And I think she is only
getting started in her horsemanship and in her life.
Her mom turned into an awesome competitor too.
Congratulations Haley!
Sierra M0rrison showed with us in 2009 and 2010. Here she can
be seen driving ERL So Be It, (“Sobe”). She did a good job.
Anna Barnes showed with us between 2009 and 2014. She led
Larry over the jumps to several AMHA World Championships
and Reserve Championships. She won our very first World
Championship with Larry in 2009.
Anthony Coker was a neighbor who lived down the road. After
driving by our ranch to and from school he asked his parents to
talk to us about working with our horses. Anthony showed
“Sobe” for two years. He also worked with a filly named “Kissy”
on Jumper.
Later Anthony played in the varsity football program of Santo
High School :) He also became an all state weight-lifter. He
dead-lifted 455 pounds squat lifted 465 pounds in 2017. We wish
Anthony well in his future endeavors.
Anthony is shown here on the left with his brother Austin on the
right.
Heather Bolton showed and trained Sunset Mountain Blue Star
Beauty in 2014 and 2015, Here she is competing in Versatility.
Heather and Beauty had several top-10 placings at the AMHR
National Championships. Heather showed Beauty in Roadster,
Showmanship, Country Pleasure Driving, Hunter, and Jumper.
Heather also helped our young friend Faith as a “safety rider”
with her when Faith started driving MoonDust at age 6.
